3 Simple Ways to Spot the Root of Bitterness in Your Life
The Root of Bitterness Doesn’t Show Up At Once But Peeks Through the Soil a Little Here and a Little There
“See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.” Hebrews 12:15
Recognizing bitterness is challenging. Why? Because you can’t easily see it growing above the surface of your heart.
While sins like anger or disobedience can be easily spotted, bitterness remains hidden for the most part.
The above verse says “... bitter root grows up…” which essentially means that it gradually…
sprouts through the soil and sees the world.
Bitterness usually shows up in our souls as negative thoughts towards a person or sour, distrusting and cynical behavior towards the one who has offended us. When not uprooted in a timely manner, this leads to producing a hurtful and scornful fruit since our soul is wounded.
How to Spot the Root of Bitterness When It Stays Hidden Behind Other Emotions
Ask yourself these questions:
1. Do you continuously replay the conversation you had with someone?
The only reason you keep doing this for possibly days in a row is to justify the anger you are piling up in your heart against them.
If this is happening, it’s a red flag that something has started making your heart bitter.
2. Do you find yourself having no control on what you say?
If you find yourself critical, irritated and rude then it indicates the hidden bitterness in your heart.
When you can’t stop pouring the junk out of your heart it’s a big indicator that your mouth is releasing the bitterness lying deep down.
3. Do you often get sick or suffer from ongoing illnesses?
Scientists and psychologists both conclude that if bitterness is unchecked it starts revealing itself as different illnesses like high blood pressure and heart rate and more.
These bunch of emotions are likely to make you sick.
“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.” Ephesians 4:31
